About Our Organization
The Epilepsy Foundation of Louisiana is the only agency of its type to exclusively provide outreach, education and advocacy to individuals with epilepsy and seizure disorders. Since its inception in 1977, the Foundation has provided services to individuals with epilepsy and their families living up to its mission statement, “The Epilepsy Foundation of Louisiana works to ensure that all people with seizures are able to participate in all life experiences and will prevent, control and cure epilepsy through services, education, advocacy and research.”. The Foundation continues to be an information and referral agency with a “hands on” focus providing support group meetings around the state, clinical outreach programs, newly diagnosed one-on-one meetings and patient assistance programs. But the new direction of the agency is to Educate and Advocate Epilepsy in all-public realms. With this in mind, the Foundation takes every opportunity to educate the public on seizure recognition and first aid. The Foundation works with numerous agencies, both private and public, conducting training sessions throughout the state. We have more than 10 different programs that specialize in age levels and work specialties. All these trainings are given at no charge to the consumers. The Foundation is funded by local and statewide fund raising events conducted to support services. The Seize the Day 5K/1 Mile Fun Run in Baton Rouge, Carpe Diem 5K/1 Mile Fun Run in Lafayette, New Orleans Dash, Seize the Road Bike Tour/5K in Shreveport and the annual Seats for Seizure Gala in Baton Rouge help keep the agency from depending on state allocations and let the dollars raised be used within the state. We want to help others but mostly we want to show others how to help themselves. Epilepsy is a disorder… not a disease. No one asks for it, no one wants it. But if one is diagnosed with epilepsy, the Foundation of Louisiana is here to help.
